Some of the greatest bands represent the local music scene. What might look like a bunch of scruffy haired teenagers could turn out to be the best live band around. In the early days of the punk rock movement, underground music was heavily praised. People who went to live house shows were considered to be supporting a local music scene that was part of a counterculture that stood against the prevailing tastes of society. While in today’s world, even the best live band might be mocked for playing such small venues, that wasn’t the case in those days. The proof that you actually went to a particular underground band’s live show got you special respect from the following that said band had. Things should still be like that today, considering that some of best bands are local. Everyone should take an opportunity to go and see some great individual party band, or maybe hire one out for an event.

Far from the cover band stereotype, there are many people who play with a small party band that have amazing talent and even write their own songs. Maybe it harkens back to the time of the cassette culture. For those who are too young to remember, there was a time in the late 1970s where fans of edgy rock music turned towards a completely independent market for their music. People began to release underground recordings on cassettes that they made themselves, and fan magazines carried advertisements for local music across the country. The greatest bands that played in one locale could be heard all over by those who took the plunge and ordered a homemade cassette tape. New recording technology had made the recording industry democratic.

While this might seem like the product of some bygone era, anyone who wants to get an edgier and more unique sound need only turn towards the Internet. This sort of culture is alive and well. Since people can now distribute music internationally, you might very well be seeing next generation’s rock stars today when you go to see a small party band at a local event. Keep in mind that at one point, you would have been praised for supporting an up and coming artist.
